Happy April 1st!

It might be April Fool's Day but, no kidding,
people really do live in these houses:

The late Terry Brown, a professor at the University of
Cincinnati's College of Design, built the Mushroom House
between 1992 and 2006.  He invited his students to contribute
to the unusual residence.

The neighbors refer to this home as The Fish House.
I gather the HOA's codes and restrictions have expired!

One Log House
Believe it or not, this house was carved into one 2000+ year
old redwood tree felled in Garberville, California.  The interior
measures 7 ft. high and 32 ft. long.

Robert Bruno
Architect Robert Bruno spent 23 years building his
"pig" house in Lubbock, Texas, using 110 tons of steel.

Sou-Fujimoto
"House NA", aka The Transparent House, was built by Sou
Fujimoto Architects in Tokyo, Japan.  The 914 sq. ft. house
was inspired by tree houses and offers little privacy.

Speaking of tree houses . . . . .

Located in Belgium, ingenious homeowners turned
a 100 ft. tall water tower into their very own high-rise.

Maybe this house started out as
the bridge's toll keeper's residence.

Dawn Rimmer
This wooden shoe inspired home is located in The Netherlands.

Inger Hogmoen
A little too thin for me.

Overlooking Lake Michigan, this pre-fab
house was constructed in just 8 weeks.

The Space House was built in the 1970s by
Curtis King in Signal Mountain, Tennessee.

French designer Antti Lovag expressed his rebellious attitude toward
traditional structures by building the Bubble Castle.  Located in
Theoule, France, and not yet 50 years old, the dwelling has already
been designated a historic monument by the French Ministry of Culture.

As much as I admire individuality, I'm going to leave these types
of houses to the more eccentric who can appreciate them the most.

Have a fun April Fools Day!

  2. What fun to see these. We have one of those space age houses not too far from us on Lake Michigan. It looks like a big UFO- xo Diana

    1. I grew up in the 60s and I thought that by the time I was an adult we'd be living like the Jetsons! It would be fun to live in an unusual house but it probably gets a little tiring having people drive by and taking pictures of your home.

  3. Thank you so much for these photos, they're amazing, I pretty much like them all except the pig house.

I love the first one and the shoe, so clever.

  6. These houses are awesome, but I don't know if I would want to live in one. I do love watching "You Live In What?" on HGTV. They highlight two to three unusual houses per episode.

    1. You're right - they do look fun but after a while I bet it gets as ordinary feeling as a regular house. Gotta say, though, I'm kinda crushing on the wood shoe!

  7. I love this post and I'm going to bookmark it to show my daughter. My favorite was the several storied tee-pee shaped house with the swinging bridge.
My hubby and I are celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary this week and we are having a $25 give-a-way, please come over and get your name in the drawing :)
    Have a marvelous week,
    Your blogging sister, Connie
